Hebe 'rakaiensis' also known as 'Shrubby Veronica' is most certainly one of the most popular little hebes of all time! I am not sure whether I grow 'rakaienis' for the fact it is smothered in clusters of white flowers in early and mid-summer or for the beautiful healthy evergreen, glossy fresh green leaves! This little hebe forms a plump rounded neat dome shape and is fully hardy, prefering a full sun to partial shade spot in the garden or rockery. This little cutie is also suitable for ground cover and coastal planting and because of its outstanding garden performance has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit (RHS AGM). It is easy to see why this particular shrub has been given the name Hebe with the name originating from Greek mythology. In Greek and Roman works of art, Hebe was always depicted as an attractive goddess who was the keeper of the pitcher of elixir of youth. This elixir contained nectar which was thought to restore or maintain a persons youthfulness and her role was to serve nectar to give the gods and goddesses of Mount Olympus everlasting youth! Hebe 'rakaiensis' always looks fresh and healthy, a real evergreen cutie!
